I was quietly typing away at my computer this morning when a
movement caught my eye, just to my right – outside on the window.
“Ahh!” I erupted involuntarily. You’d think I’d be used to huge insects by now, but this three inch grasshopper was especially disturbing. His mouthparts were moving around in a sideways grinding motion and his beady eyes were fixed on me.
Ed grabbed the camera, took its picture and then, ungratefully, I asked him to kill it, recalling that these grasshoppers like to take huge bites out of papaya and mango leaves which I must admit create fruit that takes precedence over grasshoppers.
“I’ll take it somewhere,” he replied, grabbing an empty yogurt container from the kitchen. He was gone about 10 minutes then described the grasshopper’s getaway to me. “I took him across the street where the bike trail starts, by a huge leafy hedge. When I sat him on the ground he paused, then made an enormous spring for freedom, right into the bushes.”
Good, I hope it stays there.
