While plying my wares at the famous Armadillo Christmas
Bazaar in December, I was visited by this
Texas character. His name is
Luther Edmonson, and he is a nationally known dog groomer and grooming judge.
Coincidentally, I remembered seeing him at a major dog
grooming convention where I was exhibiting my jewelry in Georgia
several years earlier. He was hard to forget. The cowboy hat he wore at the
time was at least 50 gallon capacity, and he announced each competition in a
colorful Texas drawl over a PA
system that blasted out painful screeches every time it was turned on.
I remember this clearly-the contestants painstakingly groomed
and dyed their dogs to look like carousel horses, bumblebees and other things
not remotely related to their actual species. It was creative grooming, and pretty
darned entertaining. The dogs didn’t mind, and I have to say it was interesting!
This is what I love about Texas-it’s a land full of real
individuals with surprising and colorful lives.
