Bug Thoughts March 18, 2009 By Merry Leave a Comment My husband and I were collecting seaweed at the beach for our garden on Saturday when a beautiful swallowtail butterfly flitted through the drab landscape like an escaping sunbeam. “Ed, look!” I shouted, but it drifted away before I could get his attention. The morning would’ve been worth it just for the ocean’s gift of vegetable minerals, but the butterfly was like a maraschino cherry. Why there? And why only one? Sometimes I think about things offhandedly, trying to match up ideas like puzzle pieces. And animals are the greatest puzzle of all, because they can’t talk. Insects ought to have a lot to say, their lives are infinitely short and packed with action. I’d rather wonder what a bug is thinking about than worry about the economy anymore.
