A couple years ago my husband and I were taking a walk here in Florida around dusk, and had our attention caught by some movement overhead. We were thrilled to see a flying squirrel parachuting from a branch and thought we’d witnessed something very rare.
Later on I discovered that flying squirrels can be as common as their fluffy tailed daytime counterparts. But the fact remains; they’re rarely seen by most people.
Since that time I’ve learned that they’re sometimes kept as pets, where their lifespan is greatly improved. (Apparently they’re a favorite prey of owls, housecats, snakes and so forth.) They’ve even developed a way of landing on a trunk and immediately scooting to the other side to limit their visibility as a target.
I’d love to hear from someone who has one of these guys as a pet- do they keep you up at night?
