I love those giving volunteers who participate in guinea pig rescue. One of the groups I’ve become very friendly with is Orange County Cavy Haven. Together we have worked on a couple of benefits, where their fans and volunteers and supporters purchase jewelry from The Magic Zoo, and I donate a percent of my profit to their group.
The fact that I have a direct causative role to play in helping to feed or care for a guinea pig or two really makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, just like a guinea pig! I get to help a guinea pig rescue! Yippee!
You know, having your own business and helping a rescue group is some kind of wonderful. And I know those volunteers work awfully hard. Guinea pigs may be small, but there is a lot of work that goes into their care and adoption.
I am a big believer in helping non-profit organizations. And being able to create jewelry that directly impacts the lives of people and their pets is a great thing. And yes, of course I do make guinea pig jewelry. How could I not?
Back in the 1950s, our family kept a hamster named Hannibal in a little cage in the basement. I would know better today, but that little fellow was loved and cared for by his 4 human siblings. Many a time we would take him out in the front yard and let him nibble on the clover. I think overall his 5 years were pretty darned happy.
He was certainly cute, with those big cheeks stuffed full of greens!
But guinea pigs are probably quite different. For one thing, they make all sorts of fabulous sounds! Hannibal the hamster, as I recall, was pretty quiet.
Wheeks, chuts and chubbles. Of course an animal as adorable as a piggie is bound to makes some equally adorable noises. And guinea pig parents swear they know the difference between all of those sounds. I bet they could even communicate to the little fellows using guinea-pigese if they wanted to.
But I think choosing a favorite guinea pig might be problematic. What if it were between a Texel and a Teddy Satin? Man that would be a tough call, since both are outrageously cute.
Sort of like a kid in a candy shop. Too many choices, and not enough time to make up your mind. Oh what the heck, why not just take one of each? I’m sure that’s happened.
Now I need to hear some guinea pig stories. How many of you have a guinea pig anecdote to share? Surely more than one! If I had a guinea pig, I think I’d have a cute story a day. I mean, just look at that face!
Seriously, though. Guinea pigs deserve the best of care. They aren’t pets to “practice on” for your kids, until they grow up a bit and can get real pet, in other words, a cat or a dog. Guinea pig rescues are probably full of failures from this sort of parental thinking.
And I bet every guinea pig would agree with me, right?
“Wheek Wheek!”
See, I told you so!
