A new study proves that dogs do use facial expression to communicate with people. Up until now, only primates have been proven to change expressions when people are around, proving communication. The University of Portsmouth did an experiment to see if dogs. Since food also is considered arousing for dogs, yet their expressions didn’t change, it is believed that this is stronger proof that expressions are changed to communicate with humans. Actions such as having their tongues out show attentiveness and relaxation, as long as panting isn’t included.
Key Takeaways:
- Dogs can use their faces to express emotion in order to communicate with humans
- A human’s attention is the biggest factors in dogs’ expressions, whether or not there is food(an arousing stimulus) present
- The most common expression dogs make is raising their “eyebrows” and letting their tongues hang out a little
“Hey dog owners, you’re not imagining it: Researchers think your pooch may be trying to say something with a pout or pleading eyes.”
