I decided to hold benefits to help animals, so a year ago I created a program to help animal rescue groups, especially since times are a bit economically tough right now.
Way too many cats, dogs, hamsters, birds and other pets are losing their homes as their human companions lose jobs and houses. It’s not a pretty picture. Luckily, many good people are helping to take up the slack. It isn’t easy, as the number seems to keep growing.
Animal Rescues need Support!
It isn’t easy to keep food on the table, a roof over your head and a warm and loving environment to abandoned pets at the same time! But many good-hearted people are doing just that!Their hearts and their homes go out to these unwanted ones.
Do you know how many abandoned pets there are?
* At least 5 to 7 million abandoned animal pets arrive in animal shelters every year.
* At least 3 to 4 million are put to death before they can be adopted. Yes, that’s 60% of abandoned dogs and 70% of cats
* 50% of animals that end up in shelters were given up by their human companions, and another 50% were picked up by animal contro.
* Just 2% of cats and kittens and between 15 to 20% of dogs are able to make it back to their homes.
These are disturbing facts! This information came from the ASPCA website.
I also found out that there are around 5,000 independently owned shelters for animals in he USA. I’m sure this is a good thing, because there is certainly a need.
Did you know that organizations called “SPCA” or “Humane Society” are not connected to the national organizations? This was a total surprise to me; I thought the ASPCA and Humane Society were the national versions of local chapters. But not so!
Helping this huge flood of homeless pets is certainly an uphill battle, but with enough of us in there pitching we can help find homes for all these luckless pets, and make them lucky again.
How can you help?
Feel free to contact your local shelters and see what you can do. Maybe they need old towels, dog and cat food, toys and so on. Anything to help make the lives of these abandoned animals a bit more bearable.
So many veterinarians are donating their time to spay, neuter and care for injured and abandoned animals. It’s amazing how hard these dedicated animal lovers work. I love vets and their staff!
Would you like The Magic Zoo to do a benefit for your favorite rescue?
There is a link at the top of this blog post. You can click on it and find out what I’m doing to help animal rescue groups. I want you to pass the information on to others! The more rescues I can help, the better.
I often tell about my current rescue benefits on my FB page, so you can go there and find out about it as well.
If you have a pet you don’t think you can care for any longer, please find it a home yourself. Better yet, keep that devoted animal with you, and both of you will be much happier!
And please, please please spay/neuter your pets!
