An adorable pit bull puppy picture was shown to me by a proud owner (or should I say human companion) at a Veterinary Conference several years ago. Courtney pulled out her cell phone, searched a few moments and then squealed, “See how adorable he is!”
Now, a lot of pet owners show me their favorite companion animals in my jewelry booth. But this snow white little bundle of pit bull cuteness was over the top. I held the phone for a few minutes, drinking in what had to be one of the cutest pit bull puppy pictures ever. “How old is he there?” I asked. She said just a few months old. But not a he, a she. And sure enough, this little girl had a sort of softness about her personality. Obviously a female!
Anyway, that was the turning point for me. I’d been asked by my customers for years to design a pit bull pendant and earrings. But that little sweetie pushed me over the edge. After returning from the show, I sat down at my studio desk and started researching pit bull faces. They have good bones, and strong pleasant faces. In other words, they make very good subject matter.
The wonderful thing about designing in silver and gold is that you can represent any of the pit bull color variations, even the blue pit bulls. And of course there are so many different shades a pit bull may come in; white, blue, black, brindle and so on.
My first pit bull design was the larger head. I was proud of it, but realized it was a little large for a pair of earrings. So I made a second design, a little smaller. Perfect! By virtue of this happy accident, I now have a pittie pendant in two sizes plus a larger pendant.
Do I have a pit bull terrier myself? No. But I appreciate the breed, and feel like it has been much maligned. Hundreds of my customers are pit bull owners, and I get to admire their sweet temperaments and beauty through their colorful stories and photographs.
Have a pit bull yourself? Tell me about him/her, and what your favorite thing about this breed is. One of the perks of being an animal jewelry artist is getting to hear everyone’s fabulous animal stories! And you can take a look at my pit bull jewelry creations any time you choose!
